Getting to Coron: Every Route, Explained.
Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) in Busuanga has direct flights from Manila. Or take the scenic ferry from El Nido. Here's how each works and what to expect.
Flying to Coron (The Standard Route)
Flights From Manila
Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines run the only direct flights to Coron. Both airlines depart Manila multiple times daily, with the journey taking just under 1 hour.
- Cebu Pacific: Typically ₱1,800–₱3,500 return. Check their website directly for deals; early bookings (1–2 weeks out) are cheaper than walk-up fares.
- Philippine Airlines: Slightly more expensive, ₱2,200–₱4,000 return, but more reliable on weather delays.
Flights arrive at Francisco B. Reyes Airport (airport code USU), located on Busuanga Island about 45 minutes north of Coron Town.
Airport to Coron Town (45 Minutes)
Three options meet every flight:
- Shared van/shuttle: ₱150–₱200 per seat. Drivers assemble passengers until the van is full (usually 8–10 people), then depart. Can take 1–3 hours if you're one of the first passengers and the van waits for others.
- Private van: ₱500–₱800 for the whole vehicle (seats 6–8). Book in advance through your guesthouse or via WhatsApp with local drivers (ask your accommodation for contact details).
- Motorbike taxi: ₱400–₱600 for one person. Faster but uncomfortable with luggage.
Ask your guesthouse to arrange the van pickup 2–3 days before arrival. They'll coordinate with the driver and confirm meeting point. You'll avoid standing around the airport with luggage while the shuttle fills up.
Ferry from El Nido (The Scenic Alternative)
The Journey: 3–4 Hours
If you're island-hopping through Palawan, the ferry from El Nido to Coron is a classic route. Three operators run this service:
- Montenegro Lines: ₱1,800–₱2,000. Departs 8am, arrives Coron ~noon. Decent-sized boat, more stable in rough seas.
- Atienza Shipping: ₱1,600–₱1,800. Older, smaller boat; can be cramped and bouncy. Cheaper but less comfortable.
- Calamianes Fast Ferry: ₱2,000–₱2,200. Newer, faster boat; arrives closer to 11am.
Book tickets the day before at the El Nido port or through your guesthouse. Prices fluctuate by season; May–Nov are cheaper, Dec–Apr are peak prices.
These boats don't follow a strict schedule. "Departure at 8am" means "we leave when the boat is full," which can be 7:30am or 9am. Sea conditions can cause last-minute cancellations with no notice—if the captain decides the swell is too rough, the ferry just doesn't leave that day. You'll get a refund or a rebooking, but it's a 4–6 hour setback. Confirm your booking the evening before.
During the Journey
The crossing is scenic but can be rough. The boat rocks side-to-side; if you're prone to seasickness, take dramamine or ginger 30 minutes before boarding. The sea tends to be calmer in the early morning (7–9am) than midday.
The boat stops in Coron Town at the municipal pier. Arrivals are chaotic—tricycle drivers will swarm asking where you're staying. Agree on a price before getting in (usually ₱20–₱30 to town centre).
Ferry from Puerto Princesa (Slower, Less Convenient)
A ferry route exists from Puerto Princesa to Coron, but it's 8–10 hours overnight or as a day ferry with stops. The boat is slower, the journey is longer, and you lose a full day. Avoid unless you specifically want to spend an overnight in Puerto Princesa and don't mind arriving in Coron late afternoon.
Cost is similar to the El Nido ferry (₱1,600–₱2,000), but the time lost makes flying from Manila or ferrying from El Nido far superior.
Getting Around Coron Town
Tricycles (The Daily Transport)
Tricycles are the main transport within town. Flagging one down costs ₱10–₱20 for short trips within the centre. Longer rides (airport to town, town to hot springs) are negotiated: ₱50–₱100. Drivers rarely have change for large bills; always carry ₱500 notes or smaller.
After dark, negotiate the fare before boarding. Most drivers are honest, but a few take advantage of tourists at night.
Walking
Coron Town is small. From the pier to most central guesthouses is 10–15 minutes on foot. Once you've arrived and checked in, you can walk to restaurants, the market, and diving shops. You don't need transport for daily life unless you're venturing to outlying beaches or hot springs.
Motorbike Rental (For Multi-Day Stays)
If you're staying 3+ days and want to explore the island independently, rent a 110–125cc motorbike for ₱300–₱500/day. Get a helmet and basic insurance. Rides to Maquinit Hot Springs, Siete Pecados dive site, or outskirts beaches are quick and cheap this way.
Before you ride away, take a 2–3 minute video walking around the entire bike. Show every scratch, dent, and existing damage from every angle. Get the rental shop owner to watch (or at least acknowledge) this video. Take a photo of your notes on your phone. When you return the bike, the rental shop will claim you caused damage that was already there—this video is your proof. Without it, you could be charged ₱2,000–₱5,000 for pre-existing "damage you caused."
Bangka Boats for Tours
Island-hopping tours depart daily at 8–9am from the municipal pier. These are booked through guesthouses, Viator, GetYourGuide, or local tour operators walking the pier. A group tour (₱1,500–₱2,000 per person) includes a guide, 4–6 stops (Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Skeleton Wreck, beaches), and lunch. Private boats cost ₱5,000–₱8,000 for 4–6 people for a full day.
Connections to/From Coron
Coron → El Nido (The Classic Palawan Route)
The reverse ferry journey (Coron to El Nido) uses the same operators and takes 3–4 hours. Departs Coron at 8am, arrives El Nido ~noon. Cost is the same: ₱1,600–₱2,200. Book your return ferry ticket at least 1 day ahead.
Coron → Puerto Princesa (If You're Doubling Back)
The long ferry to Puerto Princesa exists but is rarely worth it. Instead, fly from USU back to Manila (₱1,500–₱4,000, 1hr), then take a flight or bus to Puerto Princesa. You'll save time and money.
Coron → Calauit Island (Safari Park Day Trip)
A 2–3 hour boat ride north leads to Calauit Wildlife Sanctuary, home to African zebras and antelopes (introduced in the 1970s). Entry ₱500. It's an unusual and popular half-day excursion. Book with local tour operators or your guesthouse.
Practical Logistics Checklist
- Flying in: Book flights 2–3 weeks early for better prices. Arrange airport pickup through your guesthouse. Arrive with small bills (₱500 notes) for tricycle fares.
- Ferry from El Nido: Book tickets the day before. Check weather/sea conditions the evening prior. Board early to claim a seat on the side away from the sun and spray.
- First night accommodation: Book your first 2 nights before arrival; the pier will fill with tricycle drivers and guesthouse touts. Having a confirmed booking avoids negotiation stress when tired.
- Motorbike rental: Document the bike before riding. Keep the video and photos on your phone throughout your stay.
- Return to Manila: Book your return flight at least 2–3 days in advance. Arrange airport transfer from your guesthouse the day before departure.
