Where to Stay in Siargao: Areas, Hotels & Honest Picks.
General Luna is where 90% of visitors base themselves, but it's not the only option. Here's what each area offers and who it suits — from ₱500 dorms to ₱8,000 boutique resorts.
General Luna: The Main Hub
Best for: First-timers, digital nomads, foodies, nightlife-seekers, anyone who wants convenience and community.
General Luna (GL) is where 70% of Siargao's tourists stay. Tourism Road runs parallel to the beach and contains most restaurants, bars, surf schools, shops, and accommodation. You're 5–10 minutes walking distance to coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, an ATM, a pharmacy, and other travelers. The beach itself is a working fishing beach — not a "postcard lagoon" but authentic and pleasant at sunrise.
Budget Accommodation (₱500–800 ~USD 9–14)
Hostels and basic guesthouses cluster at the northern end of Tourism Road. Rooms are clean, fan-cooled (no AC), shared bathrooms, communal kitchens. Examples: Bravo Hostel, Cloud9 Backpackers. Community vibe is strong; you'll meet other travelers, find roommates for island tours, and get reliable restaurant recommendations. Good for solo travelers and budget-conscious groups.
Mid-Range (₱1,500–2,500 ~USD 27–44)
Boutique guesthouses and small hotels throughout GL. Private room with AC, private bathroom, breakfast included, Wi-Fi, and usually a small common area or garden. Examples: Siargao Bliss, The Jungle, Pacifico Beach Club. Quality is genuinely good for the price — owners usually live on-site, maintain standards, and provide solid local advice.
Upscale (₱4,000–8,000 ~USD 71–143)
Nay Palad, Isla Cabana, and other boutique properties. Think: designed rooms, excellent service, small pools, restaurant on-site, premium linens, design-focused. Prices reflect the amenities and attention to detail, not just the location. Useful if you want to decompress after active days, or if you're celebrating something. Not mandatory for a good trip.
Practicality
Book your first night before arriving; the rest can be flexible. Most places offer walk-in rates 10–15% cheaper than online booking. Main agitations: noise from bars 11 pm–1 am (especially weekends), motorbike traffic throughout the day. Earplugs help. The southern end of Tourism Road is quieter than the central tourist strip.
Cloud 9 Area: Surfer Central
Best for: Intermediate-advanced surfers, wave chasers, people who want to be near the break, tighter community vibes.
Cloud 9 is 10–15 minutes south of General Luna by motorbike. The area orbits the iconic Cloud 9 boardwalk — a covered beachfront structure with a viewing tower, food stalls, bars, and a watching area directly above the break. Accommodation here is ~60% surfer guesthouses and hostels, ~40% upscale boutiques.
Budget (₱800–1,500 ~USD 14–27)
Surfer-focused hostels and guesthouses. Community is tight — you'll recognize the same people in the water, at breakfast, at the bar. Facilities are basic but functional. Wave-riding is the primary currency here; non-surfers may feel slightly out of place.
Mid-Range (₱2,000–3,500 ~USD 36–63)
Small boutique hotels catering to surfers and couples. Private rooms, AC, decent food nearby, friendly owners. The vibe is more intimate than GL — fewer tourists overall, more local flavor.
Upscale (₱4,000–6,000 ~USD 71–107)
Design-focused boutique hotels with pools, restaurants, and premium finishes. Less common than in GL but available.
Practicality
Pros: closer to the break, more relaxed vibe, easier to find other surfers. Cons: farther from the main restaurant and nightlife scene, fewer dining options, fewer nearby shops. Nightlife here is quieter but more genuine. If you arrive after 5 pm, arrange transport to GL for dinner — evening habal-habal or motorbike rides can be sketchy for tourists unfamiliar with the route.
Pacifico: North Coast, Quiet
Best for: Advanced surfers, introverts, people wanting solitude and better value, digital nomads seeking focus.
Pacifico sits on the quieter northern coast, ~30 minutes by motorbike from GL. Waves are more advanced (lefts over reef, bigger power). Accommodation is budget-friendly (₱600–1,500 ~USD 11–27), fewer tourists, and the vibe is genuinely remote. Some basic restaurants and small shops; nothing fancy.
Vibe Mismatch Risk
If you're here for nightlife, restaurants, and a social scene, Pacifico will feel isolating after day two. If you're here to surf and disconnect, it's close to perfect. The town has friendly locals but limited English-language services. Think carefully before committing; what feels "quiet and authentic" on day one can feel "boring and cut off" by day four if you're not genuinely seeking solitude.
Dapa: Port Town, Transit Only
Dapa is Siargao's working port town on the northwest coast (where ferries from Surigao arrive). It's a transit point, not a destination. Zero tourism infrastructure, minimal restaurants worth eating at, accommodation is grim. Don't stay here — take the van to GL immediately upon arrival. The 45-minute van ride to GL costs ₱80–120 (~USD 1.50–2) per person.
Booking Strategy & Logistics
Booking Platforms
Agoda and Booking.com dominate Siargao listings. Prices are usually identical across both platforms; pick whichever one gives you free cancellation. Avoid booking through Airbnb — many "Airbnbs" here are actually guesthouses that have duplicate listings on multiple platforms and oversell. Direct email to smaller guesthouses sometimes yields 10–15% discounts.
First Night Booking
Book your first night before arriving. Once you're here, you can walk in to other places and negotiate cheaper rates (10–15% discounts for same-day bookings are normal). This gives you flexibility without the stress of arriving jet-lagged with no bed.
Cancellation & Flexibility
Always select "free cancellation" when booking, even if the price is slightly higher. Typhoons, ferry cancellations, and personal plans change quickly in the Philippines. Flexibility is worth the few extra pesos.
Checkout/Check-in Times
Standard is 11 am checkout, 2–3 pm check-in. Most places will hold luggage if you arrive before check-in or want to stay out after checkout. Communication via WhatsApp (everyone here has it) is normal and efficient — ask when booking.
Rate Fluctuations
Mid-October through November (peak surf season), prices jump 20–40% and availability drops. Book 6–8 weeks ahead. March–May (calm season) is the cheapest and least crowded — prices drop 15–25% and you'll have choice of accommodation.
Practical Accommodation Tips
Rooms with Windows Over AC Units
If the room's only AC unit blows directly on the bed, humidity gets trapped and the room smells musty within days. Request a room where the AC unit is positioned away from the sleeping area or ask if windows can be opened simultaneously with AC for air circulation.
Water & Shower Quality
Siargao's water is generally clean; tap water is safe in most tourist areas but not universally potable. Budget accommodation may have inconsistent hot water. Check shower pressure before committing to a multi-night stay.
Motorbike Security
If you're renting a motorbike, ask the accommodation for secure parking. Never leave a bike on the street, even for 10 minutes. Petty theft is uncommon but happens.
Wi-Fi Reality Check
Wi-Fi in Siargao is generally decent (4–10 Mbps typical) but inconsistent during peak hours (6–9 pm). If you're working remotely, choose accommodation with guest reviews confirming reliable internet. Budget places often have weaker signals.
Noise Expectations
General Luna: expect noise 11 pm–1 am on weekends from beach bars. Cloud 9: quieter but occasional events. Pacifico: genuinely quiet. Earplugs or a white-noise app helps.
